Russet, an adventurous, mischevous and rather scruffy young Bushtail, lives with his mother, father, brothers and sisters under a large reclining tree. All here live in peace, the only concern on the minds of all being the yearly coming of the cold season. But the Treelands holds a secret. A secret which casts its blinding gaze from the Flatland border, and which lies in wait for any who dare get too close.

Reading Russet is an all-encompassing experience. My first impression gave me a strong wave of nostalgia; it reminded me of the classic stories I grew up reading and watching as a child—tales like The Lion King and Bambi, which I am immensely fond of and influenced by still today. Much like these old Disney favorites, Russet captures the same wonder, splendor, and necessary terror of the natural world.

It is a deeply heartfelt narrative that explores the full spectrum of emotions, both human and animal. Because of this relatable emotional depth, the adventure is truly worth undertaking for nearly any reader.

Darren's writing is easy to follow and brilliant in its simplicity. Imagining the perspective of speaking and seeing as animals is a difficult task, but his use of metaphor is clever, and he creatively depicts their view of the world around them.

I have never encountered a book quite like Russet. Not only is it captivating, but it also provides a genuinely relaxing escape—the perfect read for when one simply wants to disengage, cease overthinking, and become immersed in a captivating and rich story. The sign of a truly good narrative is becoming attached to the characters, and in Russet, that attachment is immediate and profound.

Although this book is in its early stages, I have read up to chapter 9 so far and I'm absolutely hooked!

Darren is a wonderfully gifted writers with a rare, innate talen for magnificent storytelling. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the rest of this story unfolds.
